Each state PTA then submits the top five theme ideas from their state to National PTA where one student’s theme is selected.

CHESTNUT ELEMENTARY PTA IN PAINESVILLE is awarded a Mary Lou Anderson Grant

As education budgets tighten, schools may find it tough to keep art programs alive. That’s why PTA is proud to announce the recipients of the national Mary Lou Anderson Reflections Arts Enhancement Grant—a matching grant for student-centered arts education programs.
The objective of the grant program is to enhance arts education for students in the classroom or other learning environments through a community effort to introduce activities, materials, new technologies, techniques, and the introduction of visiting artists programs. This year’s winners are:
- Chestnut Elementary School PTA in Painesville, Ohio, will employ an artist in residence to stage a bilingual production of The Wizard of Oz as an after-school program. The artist in residence will direct the production while parent, school, and community volunteers head teams of students in set design, costuming, music, and acting.
Also awarded a grant are
Crittenden Middle School PTA in Mountain View, California
Berwyn Heights Elementary PTA in Berwyn, Maryland
The grant recipients were chosen based on creativity of the program, and the number of at risk students who are reached. Special consideration was given to programs centered on helping children whose environmental, familial, and/or socioeconomic situation may affect their academic success or ability to learn.
The grant program complements PTA’s long-standing commitment to quality arts education in public schools by providing funds to local PTAs to establish or enhance school arts programs in one or more arts areas: visual arts, photography, music (including dance), and literature (including theater). Local PTAs must submit complete applications and provide funds that match the amount they are requesting from the national PTA organization.

Reflection Artwork on Display in Washington DC
Student Artwork from Across the Country to Exhibit at U.S. Department of Education
More than two-dozen pieces selected for gallery
CHICAGO (January 14, 2008) — The U.S. Department of Education and the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) selected 30 award-winning students’ works of art to display from PTA’s national arts Reflections Program. Curated from the 2006-2007 Reflections Program, themed My Favorite Place…, by a committee from the department, the exhibit will open todaywith a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the department’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.
“Each year it is an honor to host these works of art,” said Secretary Spellings. “They are a reminder that courses such as art, dance, music and theater can be effective as part of a well-rounded education and ultimately help students develop critical math and reading skills.”
Among those scheduled to attend the event are: Morgan Brown, assistant deputy secretary, and John McGrath, deputy assistant secretary, at the U.S. Department of Education; Jan Harp Domene, PTA national president; Warlene Gary, PTA national CEO; Teresa Williams, PTA Raeflections Program chair; and other arts education advocates and leaders from across the country.
The artwork will be part of an ongoing art exhibition at the department. The pieces were selected from PTA’s national Reflections Program, a channel for students nationwide to create works of art for fun and recognition. The Reflections artwork will be open to public viewing through March 2008. Visit www.pta.org/doe to view and download images of the artworks to be exhibited.
“PTA’s Reflections Program has given millions of students a way to express themselves through the arts for more than 30 years. We’re excited for these children and the prestigious recognition they’ll receive by showcasing their work at the Department of Education,” said Domene.
The U.S. Department of Education art exhibit program at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., features visual art created by students in U.S. and international schools, and provides students and teachers an opportunity to display creative work from the classroom in a highly public space in order to honor this work as an effective path to learning and knowledge for all.
