ELEVEN REASONS WHY YOU BELONG IN PTA

  • PTA’s strength is its national membership.  When PTA speaks on behalf of children and youth, we are heard from the principal’s office to the president’s office.  Membership in PTA makes you part of over 100 years of service to children and schools.

  • PTA bylaws and procedures ensure that each PTA – from the local unit to the National PTA – operates democratically and protects the rights of each member.

  • The effectiveness of any organization is determined by the caliber of its leadership.  PTA is often the training ground for a community’s leaders because we provide printed materials and workshops on programming, budgeting, leadership skills, and parliamentary tips.

  • Ohio PTA leaders provide field service and counseling for problems which arise.  As part of a state and national organization, local PTA units exchange ideas and gain new insights from others’ experience.

  • Ohio PTA and National PTA, through government and foundation grants, develop needed research and programming in vital areas such as parenting, drug and alcohol abuse, critical television viewing skills, comprehensive health education and the arts.

  • Ohio PTA distributes an Annual Resource Guide of valuable program suggestions, membership promotions and PTA information to each unit president.  Each president also receives “Our Children” which includes “What’s Happening in Washington” from the National PTA and the Ohio PTA"The News”.  These useful periodicals are available to all members at modest subscription rates.

  • National PTA promotes PTA activities and membership through news releases, public service announcements on radio and television, and a public service advertising campaign in magazines.

  • Ohio PTA provides blanket federal income tax exemption through the Internal Revenue Service for all PTA units and councils.  Your local PTA unit is considered a 501C 3 because of its affiliation with the Ohio PTA.

  • Annual district conferences, state and national conventions, and workshops permit all PTA members to make their voices heard in the shaping of PTA policies.

  • Ohio PTA and National PTA speak out for children before the “Big Boards of Education” – the Ohio General Assembly and the United States Congress.  Ohio PTA has no paid lobbyists and PTA volunteers monitor legislation, testify on bills, and keep PTA members informed on the latest educational legislative issues.

  • PTA puts children first.  PTA brings together parents, teachers, administrators, school board members, and interested citizens to work for all children.

From our president

Ohio PTA’s theme this year is “BUILD ON OUR DREAMS AND PLAN FOR OUR FUTURE”.  At the Ohio PTA Convention in April during the Installation Dinner and at the Ohio PTA Leadership Training Conference “On the Road with Ohio PTA”, we asked those in attendance to write what their dreams were for the children and PTA.   We received many responses and will be sharing our dreams throughout The News.  If you have a dream you would like to share, please email it to me.

Dreams have been a very big part of my life and I always encouraged our daughter to have a dream and pursue it.   Walt Disney said ‘If you dream it, you can do it” and we all know what he accomplished with Disneyland and Disney World.  Dreams are really goals with a timeline.   I challenge you to find a dream or two for your PTAs, make them a reality and use them to plan for our future.  We all know to set goals (dreams) and review them throughout the year.   Those goals are what help you to accomplish your dreams for your PTA.

Let’s share my dreams for Ohio PTA this term:

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT:  It is a known fact that family engagement with a child increases his/her success.   My Dad always told us he did not want any gifts, just the family together.   Your family can be relatives, friends, neighbors and members of the community; we all work together for each and every child’s dream.

LEADERSHIP:  My first position in PTA was Popcorn Chairman.   I wanted to learn everything I could about the oldest volunteer organization that advocated for all children - the mechanics of PTA, why we had to do budgets, term planning, etc.  Leadership is a passion of mine.  I know you have heard me say this many times...the more leadership training you receive the easier your job.

MEMBERSHIP:  Where would we be without our members?  Our numbers alone are a strong message when advocating for all children.  There are so many benefits available to members from National PTA and the exciting Members Perk Program from Ohio PTA.  My dream is for every unit to increase membership by 10 members.   Promote what your PTA is doing and invite everyone to be a member.   This is a fantastic organization to be a member and we do not want to miss anyone.

Remember to find a dream or two for you unit and help Ohio PTA accomplish our dreams as “We Build on our Dreams and Plan for our Future”.
